Navigating the holidays while going through a divorce can add more stress to an already stressful time of year. Whether you recently filed or have been going through your divorce for awhile, having a plan to survive the holidays will help alleviate some stress and make the season easier to get through.
Below are some practical ideas for surviving the holidays.
Cut Yourself Some Slack
Know that you are going through an emotional time that will not last forever. The last thing you need to do is put unnecessary pressure on yourself to be at every gathering, event, or party. Do what you can and give yourself permission to say “no” to things you don’t feel up for.
Give Back to Yourself
Show yourself some love. It doesn’t have to be anything lavishing, but do something for yourself. It could be taking a yoga class, going to the spa, or the movies. Find something you love to do and make time to do it this season.
Spend Time With People You Love
While you don’t need to be at every event this season, make sure you don’t isolate yourself. Whether it’s going out or staying in, make sure to spend time with others that are important in your life.
Create Your Vision for the New Year
With the new year right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to plan and create some personal goals. Visualize what you want for the new year and dig deep into some of the passions you have in life. Maybe it’s a new hobby, side business, or some other personal goal you would like to achieve. Creating a vision board is a great way to help organize your thoughts and make sure you remember your goals throughout the year.
Remember, the holidays might be a stressful time of the year, but it won’t last forever.
